At the Art of Sport
After the Olympic torch made its way past Penshaw Monument people in Sunderland joined 3 local artists Jo Howell, Criss Chaney and Liz Shaw in their epic attempt to capture some of the spirit of the momentous occasion. Members of the public created a small artwork in either glass, ceramics or on wood in a sporting theme. The small artworks will then be brought together to create one ‘Big Picture’ to be permanently displayed in Sunderland by January 2013.
“It’s wonderful that local artists, communities and sportsman can all proudly come together for such a significant event in Britain’s sporting history.” Said Jo Howell of The Big Picture Project, “The fact that anyone from Sunderland can contribute will make it truly representational of our local pride.”
The participants enjoyed working with materials that they may never have worked with before in a fun and expressive way, and will are set to become exhibiting artists in their own right as the final piece of work is set to tour venues in the city.
Funded by The Arts Council, Gentoo Ltd and Sunderland City Council.
